Shared Storage a Slam Dunk for Utah Jazz and KJZZ-TV

Posted 10/4/2012

Location: Salt Lake City, UT
Industry: TV post-production and live event production
Working Environment: 16 workstations running various applications including Final Cut Pro

The post-production team for the Utah Jazz and KJZZ-TV is responsible for bringing the excitement of professional basketball to fans – at the arena and on TV.

NBA fans can be demanding. Not only do they want to see their team win, they want to be entertained. For the 16 Final Cut pro editors working the Utah Jazz games at Energy Solutions Arena, the ability to access HD media files immediately and simultaneously is just as important as the Jazz defense shutting down the opposing team’s high scorer. After relying on FireWire drives for projects ranging from promotions and commercial spots to graphic elements and in-house production, the editors needed an all-in-one system providing extreme flexibility.

To meet the video-editing team’s growing needs and demanding deadlines, Small Tree provided the Jazz with its GraniteSTOR TITANIUM16 Ethernet-based shared storage system, a 10GbE switch and Ethernet network adapters. A 3U rack-mount system, TITANIUM16 is configurable up to 20 GbE or 12 10GbE ports and storage capacity from 32TB to 320TB, while delivering up to 72 streams of ProRes 422. With the installation at Energy Solutions Arena, which features all 16 members connected to the TITANIUM16 via 10Gb over CAT6A, the team now has immediate access to files while offering real-time play-out. The result is significant improvement in efficiencies across the board.
