Network Switch
Definition of Network Switch
A network switch is a small hardware device that joins multiple computers together within one local area network (LAN). Technically, network switches operate at layer two (Data Link Layer) of the OSI model.
The most popular network switches today are gigabit switches, but 10 gigabit switches are gaining in popularity. Network switches have the ability to understand and direct incoming and outgoing information to a particular destination. This provides an extra degree of efficiency throughout the LAN because it improves data trafficking and reduces how much bandwidth is needed. This lack of bandwidth utility is sometimes considered wasteful but the opportunity for more speed and growth within the network is a major benefit of an effective switch.
A managed network switch can improve network performance when properly configured. Small Tree Communications has the ability to install and set up the right gigabit or 10 gigabit network switches for the performance needs of any network. Switches are a key component of an optimized network design that delivers the performance businesses need to succeed.
